Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism: What You Need to Know, What You Can Do

This class will examine the structural and societal roots of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in contemporary America. The trainers will lead an interactive and experiential workshop which will allow participants the opportunity to explore their own implicit biases, and identify ways in which they can be more effective allies to both the Jewish and Muslim communities.

Trainers: Mehlaqa Samdani, founder and director of Critical Connections, a non-profit organization in western Massachusetts that educates the larger public on issues related to American-Muslims and other targeted communities. Critical Connections focuses on issues of Islamophobia, national security, civil rights and liberties, and U.S. foreign policy, among others, through regular panel discussions and through the production of a community television show in partnership with Amherst Media; and Rabbi Devorah Jacobson, the multi-faith Chaplain at JGSLifecare, and a Board member of Critical Connections. Rabbi Jacobson also teaches classes in Adult Jewish Education, including a class entitled Islam for Jews and other Allies. She is a longtime member of the Jewish Community of Amherst.
