In this class, we will analyze peace and the ways in which it has been commodified. We will explore how the peace enacted on marginalized communities seeks to benefit Western powers and further an imperialist agenda. We will study the cases of South Africa and Palestine, two often compared countries – the former known for its “peace story” and the latter for its contentious 74 year journey towards it. This class urges you to ask the questions: What does an accountability-centered peace look like? Who stands to benefit most from internationally brokered peace agreements? How can we begin to envision a peace which doesn’t seek to punish or police, but to heal and empower those most affected?
