Going Beyond The Mirror: Expanding Your Universe With Literature

Thu, May 11, 2023, 5:00 – 6:30 PM EDT
Zoom

Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop (the “mother” of multicultural children’s literature) introduced the idea that literature can be a mirror, a window, and a sliding glass door. Every child should see themselves in the books around them. They should be able to see their friends and the world beyond their immediate community in what they read in school and at home. Our libraries should have books that remind everyone that they are a whole person. Spend some time with local educators/authors Gwen Agna and Tiffany Jewell talking books!

Tiffany and Gwen will share:

  • How to begin to support the young folks in your lives to gain confidence, awareness, and pride in who they are with books;
  • How we can support children in embracing and celebrating similarities and differences across the human spectrum;
  • How we can best support the children in our lives to be able to identify injustice and stand against it;
  • How we can do the work of continuing to learn and grow and expand our own world beyond our immediate comfort.
