Science fiction has grappled with the concept of "artificial intelligence" for over a century, but the difference between reality and how we imagined it has never been wider. The modern AI industry is built on stolen intellectual property, consumes vast amounts of resources and money, encodes racism and prejudice, and poses a significant threat to actual human intelligence and creativity. Michael J. DeLuca and Priya Chand are experienced tech professionals who in their capacity as editors at Reckoning, a nonprofit literary journal of creative writing on environmental justice, have spent the past year developing a set of best practices by which to detect whether AI/LLMs have been used on a piece of writing or artwork and make decisions about how to deal with humans who may try to pass off machine-generated material as their own work. In this class, they'll share what they've learned about how to adapt to a world increasingly saturated with AI.
